Castor Oil Information

Castor oil is extracted through the process of cold pressing the Castor Bean. Castor oil is a pale yellow in colour and has a viscous consistency at normal temperatures.

Castor oil is a triglyceride of fatty acids of which Approximately  90% is Ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid has been reported to be effective in many applications and is one of the many reasons people swear by its healing abilities. There are reports of the healing qualities of Castor Oil going back over a 1000 years. It is also used orally as an laxative to cleanse the bowels prior to examinations or medical procedures.

Benefits of castor oil for skin
  • Moisturizes and hydrates: The triglycerides in castor oil help retain moisture and draw water from the air to hydrate the skin. This makes it an excellent choice for dry skin and chapped lips.
  • Reduces signs of aging: Its antioxidant properties fight free radicals that accelerate the aging process. The oil's hydrating effects can also help soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Soothes inflammation and acne: Ricinoleic acid in castor oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that may help calm irritated skin and fight acne-causing bacteria.
  • Provides skin protection: It helps protect the skin from environmental stressors and can aid in repairing damaged skin, though it should be patch-tested and not used on broken skin.
Benefits of castor oil for hair
  • Conditions and adds shine: The high concentration of ricinoleic acid coats the hair shaft, locking in moisture to improve softness and gloss.
  • Prevents breakage and split ends: By moisturizing and strengthening hair, castor oil can help reduce breakage and the appearance of split ends.
  • Soothes the scalp: Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties can soothe a dry, irritated scalp and help fight dandruff.
  • Promotes thicker-looking hair: The oil's thick, viscous texture coats hair fibers, giving the appearance of fuller, thicker locks.
  • Nourishes and conditions brows and lashes: A small amount can be applied to eyebrows and eyelashes to condition and strengthen the hair.
How to use castor oil
For hair
Since castor oil is very thick, it is best used as a weekly or bi-weekly treatment rather than a daily application, especially for those with fine or oily hair.
  1. Dilute the oil: Mix castor oil with a lighter carrier oil like argan, jojoba, or coconut oil to make it easier to apply and wash out.
  2. Warm the mixture: Gently warm the oil blend by placing the container in a bowl of hot water. Warm oil penetrates hair follicles more effectively.
  3. Apply to scalp and hair: Massage the warm oil into your scalp to boost blood circulation. Then, work the oil through the lengths of your hair, concentrating on the ends.
  4. Leave it in: For a deep conditioning treatment, leave the oil on for 20–30 minutes, or even overnight if your hair is very dry or coarse. Cover your hair with a shower cap and towel to protect your pillows.
  5. Wash thoroughly: You may need to shampoo twice to completely remove the oil.
For skin

  1. Do a patch test: Before applying it to your face or other large areas, test a small amount of oil on your inner arm to check for any allergic reaction.
  2. Dilute for facial use: Mix a few drops with a lighter, less comedogenic oil like jojoba if your pores are prone to clogging.
  3. Moisturize: Apply a few drops to your skin after a shower while your skin is still damp to lock in moisture. You can also use it for "slugging" at night, patting a thin layer over other skincare products to seal them in.
  4. Remove makeup: Apply a small amount to a cotton swab to gently remove makeup, including waterproof mascara.
  5. Targeted treatment: Use a cotton swab to apply a small amount to specific areas of concern, such as acne spots or dry patches.
